“Then God said, ‘Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.’ Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so.”
-Genesis 1:6–7 (NKJV) )
In 1953, engineers completed the Delta Works in the Netherlands where a vast system of dams and sea barriers which were designed to hold back the North Sea after a devastating flood had claimed thousands of lives. What once overwhelmed the land was permanently restrained by carefully placed boundaries. The sea was not removed, but it was ordered. Chaos was not destroyed, but it was contained.
At times, chaos or conflicts are inevitable. On the second day of creation, God did something similar on a cosmic scale. He did not remove the waters; He separated them. He imposed order on chaos. He set a firmament (an expanse, a separation) between the waters above and the waters below, establishing boundaries that would hold creation together. The same God who restrained the sea restrained disorder itself.
Today, lift your eyes and remember: the God who set the sky as a permanent wall against chaos is setting boundaries in your life right now. He is setting you apart from gloomy adversity unto His shekinah glory.
Whatever feels overwhelming, whatever threatens to drown you, be it panic, toxic relationships, satanic oppression, or evil thoughts, hear the voice that still thunders over the waters: “This far and no farther.” Rise above the churning sea beneath you. Refuse to live submerged in yesterday’s floods. The expanse is your inheritance: room to breathe, space to dream, clarity to see the horizon again.
Today, draw the lines that heaven has already drawn for you. Say “no” where you have been saying “yes” out of fear. Close the door that keeps letting the old waters rush in. Burn the bridge that often tempts you to your old sinful self or relationships.
Step boldly into the open sky of God’s purity, protection and promise. You are not drowning. You are standing in the expanse the King Himself crafted on the second day: a wide, safe place where His children learn to fly.
Today’s Recite:
“He set a boundary that they may not pass over, that they may not return to cover the earth.” — Psalm 104:9 (NKJV)
Today’s Morning Prayers:
Father, I thank You for being the God who brings order out of chaos. Thank You for the boundaries You set in creation and in my life. Help me to trust Your limits, to honour Your wisdom, and to live within Your protection. Teach me to rise above fear, confusion, and overwhelm, and to walk freely in the space You have given me. Establish Your peace, Your order, and Your purpose in my heart today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
