January 3: SOLID FOUNDATION

SOLID FOUNDATION

“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” Matthew 7:24–25 (KJV)

In October 2012, when Hurricane Sandy struck the eastern coast of the United States, several major data centres in New York and New Jersey were flooded and forced offline. Some had placed critical power and cooling systems in basements and low levels that were vulnerable to rising waters. The servers were sophisticated, the networks powerful, and the investments enormous — but when the floods came, everything failed because what mattered most had been placed on unstable ground.

Our Lord teaches the same principle concerning life and eternity. Many hear His words, attend services, watch sermons, and scroll through some skits and clips on social media. But they go no further than hearing. Their heads are filled with religious language and shallow notions, but their lives are not built on obedience to Christ. Hearing alone is not a foundation. Christ Himself is the foundation, and everything besides Christ is sand.

Some build their hopes upon worldly prosperity, status, influence, and outward display. Others build upon an outward profession of religion — church attendance, Christian language, and public appearance. Upon these they venture their souls, their future, and their eternity. But these are all sand, too weak to bear such a structure as our hope of heaven. There is a storm coming that will try every person’s work.

Therefore, let all your aspirations, ambitions, careers, businesses, and plans in the new year rest upon the solid foundation of Christ. Let His Word govern your decisions, His will shape your desires, and His glory define your purpose. Don’t merely ‘hear’ Christ, but obey Him. Do not admire the Rock, but build upon the Rock. Do not merely desire His miracles but make His your Master.

May the Lord make you a wise builder for eternity, so that when the storms come — whether of trial, loss, death, or judgment — you shall not be moved. Then nothing shall be able to separate you from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Today’s Recite:
“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”1 Corinthians 3:11

Today’s Morning Prayers:
Lord, I thank You for being the only true and solid foundation for life and eternity. Deliver me from building on sand: on pride, appearance, wealth, or empty religion. Teach me to hear Your Word and to obey it. Establish my life, my family, my career, and my future upon Christ alone. Make me a wise builder for eternity, that nothing may shake my faith or separate me from Your love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
