January 5: LET THERE BE LIGHT

LET THERE BE LIGHT | 5 January

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.” - Genesis 1:1–3 (NKJV)

A father noticed that his little daughter always cried whenever she reached the staircase. Although she could walk, she refused to climb it on her own, and her father had to carry her upstairs each time. This continued for days and even weeks. Then one day, the staircase was fitted with a bright light. To the father’s amazement, the little girl climbed the stairs by herself: without a single tear.

This is exactly how the Bible describes the earth before God’s first creative word: formless, empty, and dark. Yet before God created plants, animals, or man, the Spirit of God was already at work, hovering over the waters, preparing the environment for divine order (Genesis 1:2).

The Holy Spirit always precedes divine transformation. In the same way, before God brings order into a human life, the Spirit first convicts, moves, softens, and prepares the heart (John 16:8). Then God spoke His first creative command: “Let there be light.” Light was created before anything else because without light there can be no life, growth, direction, or distinction. Light reveals, warms, guides, and governs. In the New Testament, Christ declares, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12, NKJV). Spiritual light must come before spiritual fruit.

After creating light, God immediately made a clear separation: “God divided the light from the darkness” (Genesis 1:4). God does not blend light with darkness; He separates them. This distinction is moral, spiritual, and eternal. The New Testament affirms this sharply: “What fellowship has light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14). Believers are not called to coexist comfortably with darkness, but to stand distinctly apart in holiness, truth, and righteousness (Ephesians 5:8–11).

Finally, beloved, you are not only recipients of light, you are a carrier of light. Also, the power of darkness has no power over your life, because you are the light of the world. Darkness shall bow to your light. The world remains in darkness not because God has no light, but because many who carry the light hide it or dim it. Where the church is silent, darkness spreads. Where believers compromise, darkness grows bolder. Without the light of Christ shining through His people, society becomes void, chaotic, insecure, confused, and hopeless again. The world does not need more noise, opinions, or arguments: it needs light.

Today’s Recite:
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”Matthew 5:14 (NKJV)

Today’s Morning Prayers:
Father, thank You for sending Your light into my life through Christ. Holy Spirit, continue to prepare my heart for Your work. Separate me from darkness in thought, word, and conduct. Help me to walk in the light and to shine as light in this world. Make my life a testimony of truth, holiness, and hope, that others may see and glorify You. I speak light to every darkness around me. No more in darkness. Let there be light in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
