(Bible Reading: Luke 10:38-42)
“But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” - Luke 10:42 (NKJV)
Mr. Jack, a senior executive once shared how, at the peak of his career, he collapsed from exhaustion in his office. His diary was full, his phone never stopped ringing, and his achievements were impressive by every external measure. Yet, while recovering at home, he admitted a sobering truth: “I had everything I worked for, but I had lost the ability to sit still, to pray, and to truly hear God.” In the quiet of recovery, now stripped of his meetings and various deadlines, he rediscovered what success had crowded out: unhurried time in God’s presence. That season realigned his priorities permanently.
This real-life account mirrors a familiar biblical scene. In Luke 10:39–42, Martha was busy, sincere, and hardworking, in fact, serving Jesus Himself. Mary, however, sat at His feet, listening to His word. When Martha complained, expecting Jesus to affirm her busyness, His response was both gentle and penetrating: “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed.” Activity was not condemned; distraction was. Service was not rejected; substitution was. Passion was not condemned, but preoccupation was.
Scripture consistently reveals that God’s deepest work in us flows from communion, not consumption. The psalmist captures this longing vividly: “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You” (Psalm 42:1). This is not the language of routine religion, but of deep spiritual appetite. Before crowns, there is always a cross to carry: a commitment to His word.
Make Jesus Christ the bread of your life. He said, “He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst” (John 6:35). Many people are exhausted not because they lack resources, but because they seek fulfilment everywhere except at the feet of Christ. No amount of achievement can substitute for divine intimacy. No level of service or labour can replace His presence. When communion is lost, even good things become burdens.
Beloved, the one needful thing is a settled choice (like Mary’s) to prioritise Christ above all else. This “good part” is not seasonal, optional, or negotiable. It cannot be taken away because it anchors the soul in what is eternal. When you choose God’s presence instead of kitchen, clarity returns. When you choose devotion above dinner, strength is renewed. When you choose Christ, everything else finds its proper place. Choose the Word of God.
Today’s Recite:
“It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” – Matthew 4:4
Today’s Morning Prayers:
Father, I thank You for reminding me that You are my true source and sufficiency. Deliver me from distractions that crowd out devotion. Rekindle my hunger for Your presence and my thirst for Your Word. Like Mary, I choose the good part today — to sit at Your feet, to hear Your voice, and to abide in You. Order my priorities, quiet my anxieties, and satisfy my soul with Christ alone. I declare that Jesus is my daily bread and my lasting fulfilment. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
