“The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” - Proverbs 18:10 (NKJV)
In October 1527, a deadly plague swept through Wittenberg, Germany. Death stalked the streets; terrified citizens fled or barricaded themselves inside. Martin Luther, the great Reformer, refused to leave. When asked why he stayed in such danger, he replied that his duty was to minister to the sick and dying.
Day after day, Martin and his pregnant wife Katharina cared for the afflicted, turning their home into a makeshift hospital. Bodies were carried out almost daily, yet neither Luther nor his household contracted the plague. In the midst of that terror, Luther wrote his famous hymn: “A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing.” He had discovered in the furnace of peril that the Lord Himself is the unbreakable refuge for His people.
Beloved, this is the unshakable truth we cling to today: the name of the Lord is a mighty fortress. Solomon declared, “The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe” (Proverbs 18:10). Not our strength, not our wisdom, not our precautions but His name. When danger presses in, when fear knocks loudly, when the enemy roars, we do not stand alone. We run straight into the tower of His name: Jehovah Jireh (our Provider), Jehovah Nissi (our Fighter), Jehovah Shalom (our Peace)—and we are lifted high above the storm, safe.
Isaiah sang in triumph, “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation” (Isaiah 12:2). The same God who parted seas and toppled walls is your strength today. Fear has no rightful place when the Almighty stands as your defence.
And hear the promise that silences every whisper of abandonment: God has said, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Therefore we may boldly say, “The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me” (Hebrews 13:5–6). He is not a distant fortress: He is with you, within you, around you. No plague, no plot, no power can breach His walls.
Beloved, whatever threatens you today - sickness, loss, opposition, uncertainty - run into the strong tower. Call upon His name. Hide in His presence. The gates are open, the walls impregnable, the Keeper is faithful. You are safe, not because the storm is small, but because your Fortress is mighty. Stand fearless. Live confidently. A mighty fortress is our God.
Today’s Recite: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” - Psalm 27:1 (NKJV)
Today’s Morning Prayers: Father, thank You that Your name is a Strong Tower and a Mighty Fortress. I run into it today and declare I am safe in You. Lord Jehovah, be my strength and my song; drive away every fear. Thank You for Your promise never to leave nor forsake me. Let me walk boldly, knowing You are my helper. Surround me, protect me, and make me a testimony of Your keeping power, in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
